Code trees
In this online activity, you will be a researcher assessing forest biodiversity by recording the status of individual trees. You will apply the same tree coding system used by the researchers involved in the Smithsonian Institution's Monitoring and Assessment of Biodiversity Program.
To record the status of each tree, you need to refer to the key on the left of the plot. There are 8 different codes for recording the status of trees. Each code has an abbreviation and a tree icon.
The aim of the activity is to match the correct tree icon with the abbreviated
code recorded in each of the 25 quadrats. Follow these steps:
- Starting with quadrat 1, select a tree icon from the bottom or the right of the plot. Drag and drop the tree icon, which you think matches the abbreviated code of 'AS' recorded in the quadrat.
- Check your answer. If you have matched the correct tree icon with the abbreviated code, the tree icon will stay in the quadrat. If your selection is incorrect, the tree icon will disappear from the quadrat and return to the margins of the plot.
- Repeat these steps until you've selected the correct tree icon for each of the quadrats.
