Diversifying the fishing industry

The fishing industry is still the major employer in many parts of Nova Scotia. Now fishermen concentrate on shellfish such as lobster, scallop and crab. These account for almost half the total fish caught.

The industry is also diversifying through the catch of non-traditional species such as skate, sea urchins and shark. Processing plants have moved with the times by developing new ways to process these non-traditional species.

Some companies are engaged in aquaculture or commercial fish farming, concentrating on salmon, trout, mussels, scallops and oysters.

Tourism is also entering the fishing industry. Popular in many regions of Nova Scotia, sport fishing is becoming increasingly important to the economy.
