Eco-Online Nova Scotia - Monitoring Biodiversity

Monitoring forest biodiversity

N. F. Douglas Lumber is working in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and Kejimkujik National Park to identify and evaluate sustainable forest practices. As part of the study, forestry control plots have been established on parkland and working plots on N. F. Douglas land. Data is being collected, as the plots are observed and compared over a period of years, to evaluate silviculture techniques.

The company has won several awards for its participation in the project. In 2000, N. F. Douglas Lumber Limited was awarded the Coastal Communities Proud Communities Award for Resource Management. In 2002, the company was awarded a citation by the Nova Scotia Forest Products Association for Principles of Forest Stewardship in Nova Scotia.

Owner Blair Douglas says, 'Our family has been in the forestry business for generations and, with each generation, we've always tried to leave more than we started with. When I leave this business, I want there to be more on the land than when I got it.'
