Silviculture and responsible stewardship

N. F. Douglas is committed to responsible stewardship of the land. It aims at managing its forests for sustainability, using various silviculture techniques. Silviculture refers to the growing and tending of trees as a branch of forestry.

In the past, the largest trees were often felled and the smaller ones left to grow. Now, it's more likely that the smaller, 'runt' trees will be cut, allowing bigger, healthier trees to seed and produce a more vigorous forest in the next generation.

Responsible stewardship of the land has long been a strongly-held company philosophy and practice. Each site is carefully evaluated for the silviculture technique best suited to it. Natural regeneration is a land management priority. The best trees are preserved to provide new seed, resulting in an even healthier and more productive forest in the future.
