Better stewards of the Earth

We must be aware that extinction is forever. Scientists believe that there have been at least five of what they call 'mass extinction events' in Earth's evolution. The most recent occurred 65 million years ago, when dinosaurs became extinct. That event opened the way for the evolution of mammals and eventually humans.

Overall, in the past, losses of species have been exceeded by the evolution of new species. This has resulted in greater diversity. But the rate of extinction of species over the last few centuries has already exceeded the rate of extinctions during the last mass extinction event — a warning signal to we humans to take better care of our environment.
